Food & Product Styling Photo Prompt

Write a food or product photo prompt with the styling, surface, lighting, and lens details that separate an appetising image from a plastic one.

The Prompt β€” replace [BRACKETS] with your details

Act as a food and product photographer writing an image prompt.

The shot:
- Subject: [THE DISH OR PRODUCT, DESCRIBED IN DETAIL β€” ingredients, texture, state]
- Purpose: [MENU / PACKAGING / SOCIAL / RECIPE BLOG / AD]
- Mood: [RUSTIC AND WARM / CLEAN AND CLINICAL / MOODY AND DARK / BRIGHT AND FRESH]
- Brand colours or constraints: [IF ANY]
- Aspect ratio: [RATIO]

Build the prompt covering:
1. Hero subject: the food or product with the specific details that signal freshness β€” steam, gloss, crumb, condensation, char, drips
2. Styling: garnish, props, cutlery, packaging, what is deliberately imperfect so it looks real
3. Surface and background: material, texture, colour, how much of it is visible
4. Composition: angle (overhead, 45 degrees, eye level), what is in focus, negative space and where it sits for text overlay
5. Lighting: source and direction, hard or soft, fill and shadow, colour temperature. Say why this lighting suits this subject
6. Lens and depth: focal length feel, aperture feel, macro or not
7. Colour and grade: palette, contrast, saturation, film feel

Deliver the final prompt as one paragraph, plus:
- A negative or exclusion list (plastic sheen, artificial colours, cluttered frame, unappetising textures)
- Three variations that change lighting only, angle only, and props only
- The specific styling details that most often make AI food images look fake, and what to add to counter each

Tell me if my subject is something image models handle badly.

How to use this prompt

  • Describe the food in sensory detail rather than by name β€” "torn sourdough with an open, uneven crumb" beats "bread".
  • Ask for negative space on the side where your text or logo will sit, before generating.
  • Generate several and pick on appetite appeal rather than technical polish.

Why this prompt works

Appetising food photography is a lighting and imperfection problem, not a subject problem. Splitting the prompt into styling, surface, and lighting layers lets you change one at a time, and explicitly requesting imperfection counters the plastic, over-symmetrical look image models default to.

Variations to try

  • Add "shot on a phone, natural window light, slightly imperfect" for content that looks native to a social feed.
  • Ask for a flat-lay version and a 45-degree version of the same dish to compare.
  • Ask for a packaging shot with the product in a real-use context rather than on white.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Asking for readable packaging text or a legible label. Composite the real artwork afterwards.
  • Over-styling until the frame is a prop collection with food somewhere in it.
  • Using a generated image of a dish you actually sell, which misrepresents the product to customers.
