Existing Content Refresh Auditor

Paste an underperforming page and get a specific refresh plan — what to add, cut, restructure, and re-target — rather than a vague "improve quality".

The Prompt — replace [BRACKETS] with your details

Act as an SEO content editor. Audit an existing page that is underperforming and tell me exactly what to change.

The page:
- URL and target keyword: [URL, KEYWORD]
- Published and last updated: [DATES]
- Current performance: [POSITION, CLICKS, IMPRESSIONS, TIME ON PAGE — WHATEVER I HAVE]
- What the page is meant to achieve: [TRAFFIC / SIGNUPS / SALES]
- The full current content:
"""
[PASTE THE PAGE TEXT, INCLUDING HEADINGS]
"""
- What the pages currently ranking above me cover: [PASTE THEIR HEADINGS IF YOU HAVE THEM]

Deliver:
1. Intent check: does this page match what someone searching that term wants? If not, say so first — no amount of refreshing fixes a format mismatch
2. Coverage gaps: the subtopics and questions the page does not answer that the intent requires
3. What to cut: sections that pad, repeat, or serve me rather than the reader
4. Structure: a revised heading outline, with what moves, merges, or splits
5. The first 100 words, rewritten to answer the query immediately instead of warming up
6. Elements that would earn the position: a table, a calculator, original data, a decision tree, real screenshots — pick what fits and say why
7. Freshness signals that are substantive rather than a changed date: what genuinely needs updating
8. Title tag and meta description rewrites, with the reason
9. Internal links to add, in both directions, with anchor text
10. The single change with the best effort-to-impact ratio, if I only do one thing

Rank everything as high, medium, or low impact.

How to use this prompt

  • Refresh before you write new pages — a page with existing history usually moves faster than a new URL.
  • Do the number-10 item first and measure for a few weeks before doing the rest.
  • Ignore advice to add words for their own sake; cutting is often what fixes a bloated page.

Why this prompt works

Refresh advice is usually generic because the model is not given the page. Pasting the full content and the competing headings turns it into a gap analysis, and putting the intent check first stops you polishing a page that was never the right format for the query.

Variations to try

  • Add your Search Console query list for the page and ask which queries the page is accidentally ranking for.
  • Ask what to do if the page cannibalises another URL you own.
  • Ask for the same audit focused on conversion rather than rankings.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the published date without changing the content. Readers and search engines both notice eventually.
  • Adding 800 words of padding because a competitor's page is longer.
  • Refreshing a page whose intent is wrong, which cannot be fixed by editing.
